From The Washington Post – Senate Republican leaders are altering their tax bill to include a repeal the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate that penalizes those who don’t have health insurance. This is a major change as they now try to accomplish two of their top domestic priorities in a single piece of legislation.
Republicans had up until Tuesday resisted making the change, worried that injecting health care would imperil the tax bill. But many of their members and 45 have supported adding the repeal.
Repealing the mandate would free up more than $300 billion over the next decade, but it would also lead to 13 million fewer people having health insurance, according to projections from the Congressional Budget Office. The ACA’s mandate ensures that costs for sicker people and people with pre-existing conditions are defrayed, lowering premiums for everyone.
The House, expected to vote on its tax bill Thursday, is considering a similar provision.
This is a great reason to put in another much needed anti-Tax Scam call to both Congressman Knight and our Senators. The only way the Resistance will be effective is if we all participate in letting our position be known.
So, let’s call our representatives, let Congressman Knight know where we stand, and ask our Democratic Senators to hold the line.
Call Congressman Knight and say something like:
I’m calling to voice my opposition to the GOP Tax bill, and particularly any attempt to repeal the ACA’s individual mandate, a move that the CBO says will result in 13 million Americans becoming uninsured.
Call our Senators and say something like:
I’m against the GOP tax plan, and hope the Senator will continue to resist the attempt to repeal the ACA’s individual mandate, a move that the CBO says will result in 13 million Americans becoming uninsured.
Senator Kamala Harris
